MED - Marine Equipment Directive: Testing in shipbuilding

With experience and expertise, Treo navigates its shipbuilding customers through the rough seas of testing regulations.

The renowned testing laboratory stands out with its unrivalled services: Treo is accredited for every type of test required for type approval and can respond individually and flexibly to customers’ wishes.

A rough wind blows at sea. The sailors in the port of Hamburg know this, as do our testing engineers. They have been helping customers from the shipbuilding and marine equipment sector for many years. They know the shipbuilding industry and its special requirements and support them with experience and expertise.

Shipbuilding test service: compass protection distance

Storms, waves, wind and weather: at sea, materials, components or electrical equipment on ships are exposed to high stresses. To ensure safety, it is crucial that they can withstand them. Our accredited testing procedures guarantee exactly that.

Environmental simulation, material testing, electrical safety or electromagnetic compatibility – we offer all the tests needed for type approval from a single source.

This means that our customers do not have to appoint a different laboratory for each test, making the process really easy and convenient.

All tests for type approval from one source

We offer a wide range of high-quality services.

We are one of the few test laboratories in Germany to have complete accreditation for our type approval procedures, including vibration tests, climate tests, EMC and technical safety tests as standard.

Type approval testing for the shipbuilding sector includes electrical wiring, lighting, navigation and communication equipment and propulsion controls. It also checks that equipment which is exposed to the risk of corrosion, for example valves, level monitoring systems or tanks, function correctly. For the functional tests of these sensitive parts, our experts have developed a test stand on which they can carry out the “dynamic inclination due to wave action” test required for type approval.

Testing standards in shipbuilding

An exemplary selection:

  • DIN EN 60945
  • IACS E10 Test Specification for Type Approval
  • IEC 60092-504
  • IEC 60533
  • ABS Rules for Building and Classing Steel Vessels
  • CCS No. 273 Guidelines for Type Approval Test of Electric and Electronic Products
  • Bureau Veritas Rules for Classification of Ships (NR 467) Part C Machinery, Electricity, Automation and Fire Protection
  • DNV-CG-0339 Environmental test specification for electrical, electronic and programmable equipment and systems*
  • Lloyd’s Register Type Approval Test Specification Number 1
  • MEPC.107(49)
  • RINA Rules for Classification of Ships Part C

*DNV-CG-0339 was previously called DNVGL-CG-0339.

Our recognised test methods include fire tests, in which we test the flammability of electrical devices and their housings. We also carry out tests on equipment such as fire extinguishers or navigation devices so that they receive approval for the international Marine Equipment Directive MED, which ensures safe ship operation.

Through our close exchange with the most important classification societies such as DNV, Germanischer Lloyd (until September 2013), Lloyd’s Register or Bureau Veritas, with whom we have been working closely for many years, we guarantee our shipbuilding customers that their equipment and products full comply with the provisions for type approval.

We put all on-board devices that need type approval through their paces and ensure safety at sea. Guaranteed!
