DIN EN IEC 60598-1: Luminaires and lamps
DIN EN IEC 60598-1 defines the safety requirements for lamps and luminaires in industrial, public, and private areas.
The standard applies to lamps and luminaires intended for connection to the low-voltage network, i.e. below 1000 V, and therefore to most luminaires. It specifies the protective measures for luminaires and lamps to protect users from electrical, mechanical, and other potential hazards. These include requirements for insulation, protection against contact and electric shock. To ensure that the luminaires and lamps fulfil these requirements, DIN EN IEC 60598-1 defines applicable tests and test methods.
Luminaires and Lamps have a broad range of applications
DIN EN IEC 60598-1 covers luminaires and lamps in all areas of application. This means that even untrained persons can encounter the devices. This is precisely why it is important that manufacturers provide technical documentation such as manuals, safety instructions, and installation instructions. Requirements for these are defined within. Manufacturers are also subject to a labelling obligation in accordance with DIN EN IEC 60598-1 and must inform users of potential hazards and provide instructions for safe use and maintenance. Manufacturers must also ensure that their products can be traced so that they can take action in the event of safety problems.
The luminaires that must be tested in accordance with DIN EN IEC 60598-1 include among others:
- Ceiling and wall lights
- Floor and table lamps
- Recessed spotlights
- Pendant luminaires
- Work lights
- Emergency lighting systems and safety lights
- Outdoor and garden lights
- Spotlights
- Streetlights
- Indirect lighting systems
As well as all illuminants:
- LED lights
- Halogen lamps
- Incandescent lamps
- Energy-saving lamps
- Fluorescent lamps
- Neon lamps
