IP 44: Testing electrical devices
The IP 44 protection rating indicates how well electrical devices and components are protected against the ingress of foreign objects and water. In our laboratory we test the enclosures and protective grilles of devices that are suitable for use outdoors or in wet environments.
Protection against water splashes and solid foreign particles
In contrast to IP 20, devices and parts with the IP 44 rating have better protection against foreign objects and water ingress. IP 44 means that foreign bodies with a diameter of ≥ 1 mm cannot penetrate the electrical device. In other words, insects or small animals cannot cause damage to outdoor lamps. These devices are also protected against contact with tools and wires. The higher rating also means that the devices are protected against splash water from all directions and can be operated in the shower area of bathrooms or in basements, as well as outdoors on terraces and in the garden.
IP 44 provides protection for devices used outdoors
It should be noted that devices tested for the IP 44 rating are not protected against complete immersion in water and are therefore not suitable for use underwater. Here are some examples of devices that are protected against water splashing and the ingress of foreign objects according to IP 44:
- Luminaires installed in bathrooms
- Lamps that are installed and operated outdoors
- Sockets and switches used in bathrooms, garages or outdoors
- Loudspeakers for outdoor use
- Electrical tools used outdoors or in damp environments such as construction sites
IP44: Protected against access with tools (diameter ≥ 1 mm), protected against foreign objects with diameter ≥ 1 mm
IP44: Protected against strong high-velocity water
