IP 54 Testing: Effective protection against dust and water
Protection class IP 54 indicates that the device has a medium protection rating.
The digit 5 states that an electrical or electronic device is protected against the ingress of dust and other foreign objects and against contact during normal operation. The digit 4 stands for protection against the penetration of water splashes hitting the surface from all directions around the enclosure. Units tested to IP 54 provide full contact protection and can be used in a variety of environments.
An IP 54 rating is recommended for devices operated in damp outdoor areas
Electric lamps and devices with the IP code 54 are suitable for outdoor use. They should be able to withstand a heavy rain shower and still function properly. Since products with this degree of protection can be operated safely in wet environments, they are suitable for use in gardens, for example, near flowerbeds. The devices should not be embedded in the ground as the enclosures do not provide complete protection against water ingress.
Insufficient protection against immersion in water
Even though the standard-tested IP 54 devices offer good protection against the ingress of water and are used in a range of outdoor settings, they must not be operated completely underwater; a higher degree of protection from water ingress is required for this.
IP 54: Protection against access with wire, dust-tight
Different types of test dust can be used, for example talcum, Arizona dust or a mixture of Portland cement and fly ash.
IP 54: Protected against strong high-velocity water
